Thursday’s scavenger hunt was my very first day mentoring with OWIP. I was a little nervous about how it would be- would the child assigned to me have fun? Would I be able to teach him or her anything? Would I learn something?
I had a wonderful time, and so did Frankie, my young photographer.
As soon as we got outside with his camera, his happiness made me at ease. He was skipping from one photographic subject to another, and exclaiming, “this is the best day ever!” It was his first day of OWIP, too. He really enjoyed the scavenger hunt, and I could tell he felt very accomplished when we found every item on the list. He said, “we make a great team” and we gave each other a high five.
I’m looking forward to the next session of OWIP!

Today was the first day of the second session of Our World in Pictures at the East 7th Street Center. Mentors and students, old and new, gathered to have another exciting photo adventure. The first lesson was a photo scavenger hunt. The children were given a list of things to find designed to help them take a closer look at the things around them in their community. Stay tuned for pictures! If you are looking for more information or want to become involved please visit the main site at http://www.ourworldinpictures.org/
Have a great day!
Janae and I went on a scavenger hunt to find the following things and make a photo story out of it:
We walked to a corner store about a block from the Community Center. Here’s what we found:

Something old

Something beginning with C

Colorful candy

Something meaningful: cigarettes. The store's owner told us about how he hates to sell cigarettes. He explained how it hurts him to see people spend their last bits of money on this addiction.

Something free...in a store? Encouragement!
Way to go, Janae!

Jane’s favorite thing to photograph has been cats. She took this picture at a house next to the Community Center. We had just talked about following a moving subject to get a clear picture–though this cat wasn’t going anywhere soon. I like how she was able to capture the cat’s personality in this one.

Still Life:

Fruit and Board

Smile

Flower
Jane’s still life photos were outstanding. She really impressed me with how she worked different angles until she got the shot she wanted.

The assignment was to find and photograph something or someone with the following characteristics:
1. Very Old
2. Beginning with the letter C
3. Free
4. With many colors
5. Important/Meaningful
Can you tell which pictures go with each one?
Ebony and Chloe, the two photography students I have worked with during the workshop over the past few weeks have been true inspirations. Their freedom, spirit, and fresh approach to photography have amazed me every time. They have learned so much! Their engagement in the process has been quick and creative, capturing everything from people in the community to subtle still-lifes. All so beautiful and telling. I can’t wait to see what moment they capture next. –Misty Ray Hamilton
Ebony
Ebony has captured some wonderful moments and people in her community. She has a wonderful eye for line, perspective, and “people pictures.”

Chloe
Along with expressing her love and showing a talent for capturing flowers and pets Chloe has an eye for texture and delicate details in her photographs.

Eliana knows what she likes in pictures, and sees possibilities quickly. She’s an explorer and experimenter and loves to take photos of animals. She’s very comfortable with people too. She took these photos when all the mentors did an impromptu lesson when we found time on our hands. One lesson was seeing rain long after the rain has stopped. Then Christina used an umbrella and the kids were like paparazzi around Ty and Isaiah. And of course Eliana found some cats. A fun shoot all around. Here’s Eliana’s photos from our impromptu lesson:

Nolan has done a great job in the classes so far; and he works really hard at finding neat things to take pictures of. He has been improving with his photography over the last few weeks. Nolan’s family is taking a special trip and he will not make it to the last week of class… We look forward to seeing him next session if he can make it then! – Jeff
